Joan Espina

Born in Mollerussa (Lérida) where he began his musical studies at the Municipal School of Music with Jordi-Agustí Piqué and Màrius Bernadó. At the Conservatory of Barcelona he studies with Agustín León Ara with whom he obtains the Superior Titles of Violin and Chamber Music and the Honor Prize for Superior Grade Violin. He furthered his studies with José Luis García Asensio and Vicente Huerta at the “Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía” in Madrid.

He has performed numerous recitals and chamber concerts throughout Spain, Europe, Africa, America and the Middle East. He has performed as a soloist in the main halls of the country, such as the Palau de la Música Catalana, L’Auditori, Auditori Enric Granados, Auditorio Nacional, etc. under the baton of maestros such as Giovanni Antonini, Juan José Mena, Jesús López Cobos, John Storgards, Alfons Reverté, etc.

Since 2006 he is a member of the National Orchestra of Spain being between 2008 and 2018 soloist of second violins and, currently, soloist of first violins (concertmaster’s assistant). He is guest concertmaster of the ‘Orquestra Julià Carbonell de les Terres de Lleida”.

In the field of historically informed interpretation, he is doing a master’s degree in early music and baroque violin at the ESMUC with the violinist and pedagogue Emilio Moreno. He is a member and conductor of the specialized groups Pyrenaeus Ensemble, Aria Antiqva and Les Inégales and collaborates regularly with ensembles such as Zarabanda, Vespres d’Arnadí, Academia 1750, Nereydas, Impetus Ensemble de Madrid, etc.

He plays a violin made by the luthier José Contreras in 1767, kindly lent by Luthería Tarapiella S.L. and a violin by the Cremonese luthier Riccardo Bergonzi.
